Having thin hair, skin and nails? It is a hormone issue! Let’s discuss solutions.
Have you had a lot of hair in the shower drain? Have you noticed hair thinning? How about your nail growth slowing down and brittle? I have solutions for that!
Biotin is definitely valuable, especially for nails. However, those with brittle nails will not always be deficient and supplementation is only effective in those with a biotin deficiency.
Here are some potential root causes for you to consider:
Hormone imbalance – as we age, hormone balance changes as well as how our hair/nail grows and skin cell turnover. Balancing hormones definitely help your hair/nail/skin concerns.
Hypothyroidism – dry skin, brittle nails, and poor hair growth/health can be an indication of hypothyroidism
Dehydration – good hydration is vital for hair, skin, and nail health, especially the skin.
Nutrient deficiencies – In addition to biotin, pay particular attention to protein (amino acids) and zinc sufficiency.
Fatty acids deficiencies – essential omega-3s are important for skin health but so are essential omega-6s, especially GLA (e.g. evening primrose oil, black currant seed oil, and borage oil).
Gut health – Hair and nails in particular are powerful indications of what is happening in the gut.
Frequent exposure to water can make nails dry and/or brittle. Recommend your patient use gloves while doing dishes or other household cleaning (which also protects them from potential chemical exposure!).
Nail polish is loaded with chemicals, and nail polish removers are also very drying. While working on nail health in particular, it is wise to avoid these chemicals.
Personal care products – those with any type of skin issue should prioritize using non-toxic body products (especially lotions) regularly. I have a line of medical grade clean skincare products and I would love to share it with you! You can take a look at it here.
